Friday 8th March marks International Women’s Day 2019, a day recognised globally to observe and commemorate the social, economic, cultural and political success of women around the world!
International Women’s Day 2019 not only allows us to celebrate how far woman have come since the initial founding of the day in 1911, but it also encourages us to push further and demand more equality between genders. Site Equip fully support IWD, especially encouraging women to get involved in the construction sector despite the stigma of construction being predominantly male.
Gender balance is essential for communities and companies to thrive, so we fully support the #BalanceforBetter campaign. The campaign provides a unified direction for males and females alike to follow which encourages balance and equal opportunity amongst genders. #BalanceforBetter is an objective which should be reinforced throughout the year, not just for International Women’s Day.
At Site Equip we hire our employees based on skill and ability, regardless of their gender. Women take up just over 25% of our entire workforce, this includes both office-based and yard workers. That may not sound like a big percentage, but according to a 2018 study only 11% of females worked within the construction industry, the previous years holding an even smaller percentages. The number of women in the construction industry is definitely on the rise, but we still have a long way to go to shake the stigma that construction is a man’s job!
