Health and Safety Executive (HSE) was created on the 1st January 1975, to undertake the requirements of the Health and Safety Commission and enforce health and safety legislation in all workplaces. HSE started under the leadership of its first director, John Locke.
HSE believes everyone has the right to come home, safe and well from their job. Their mission statement is to prevent work-related death, injury, and ill health. HSE also helps workers understand how they can personally stay safe and well during work. HSE targets industries with the greatest hazards and sectors with the worst risk management record.
HSE conducts inspections on products to identify and seek out potential risks to those who use the products. The inspection includes;
- Considering appropriate practices
- Checking whether risk controls are effective
- Assessing relevant documents (if necessary)
- Identifying any breaches of the law
- A physical observation and examination of a product under review
- Speaking to relevant people (including managers, supervisors, workers, and employee representative)
If you would like to find out more, we have some health and safety downloadable documents on our resources page on our website, which you can view here.
But what do you need to provide to ensure health and safety standards are met on your building site?
You should provide:
- Clean and working toilets
- Washbasins with hot and cold running water
- Soap and towels
- Sinks large enough to wash face, hands, and forearms
- Somewhere to change, dry, and store clothing
- Drinking water and cups if needed
- A rest area to sit, make a hot drink and eat
- Welfare facilities that are warm and well ventilated with lighting if necessary.
