This month, we’re focusing our sights towards one of the biggest music festivals in the UK, and also the world – Glastonbury Festival. The festival opened it’s doors to us on Tuesday (June 22nd), and the event is expected to attract over 200,000 attendee’s. With artist’s such as Adele, Jess Glynne, Ellie Goulding, Disclosure and ColdPlay headlining, the festival is set to be one of the biggest, and best festivals of 2016 – despite the rain!
It seems that not even the torrential downpour has deterred Glastonbury party-goers from making the most of the festival fun, as around 180,00 revellers made their way to the site in Pilton, Somerset for the beginning of the music festival.
The festival has come a long way since being known as the ‘Glastonbury Fair’, a festival that cost £1 to enter and enticed around 1,500 festival-goers. Since 1971, the festival has grown in numbers, days and headliners too! Over the years, Glastonbury has invited legends such as David Bowie to perform on their infamous Pyramid Stage. Now, it see’s hundreds of artists, creating a festival with an eclectic vibe. In addition to this, the five-day festival hosts dance, theatre, comedy, cabaret, circus, as well as other arts, and last but not least – toilets!
Jane Healy, Glastonbury’s Sanitation Manger, understands the importance of providing suitable toilets – and on a huge scale. Back in 2012, the humble toilet put paid to the ever-enduring Glastonbury Festival, when it emerged that the demand of Portable Toilets was the reason for the festival taking a year off, due to the London Olympic Games. Usually, Glastonbury’s bank of Portable Toilets are sourced from four different suppliers, but Michael Eavis, the somerset farmer who founded the festival, realised that the 2012 Olympics meant a toilet-suppliers dream, and that inevitably the cost of toilets would rise.
Acquiring 5,000 toilets for a festival such as Glastonbury is no small feat, as Jane Healy knows from past experience. Toilets, alongside the quality of headliners, and the weather are the one thing that unites everyone – they are always a massive talking point! Although, it is almost impossible for any one toilet-company to supply a festival as large as Glastonbury Festival, Site Event are considered the leading supplier for large events and festivals. So, if you have a festival coming up, give us a call in the office and let us sort your sanitation needs!
