We are pleased to announce that the team here at Site Equip has selected Spotlight UK as our Charity of the Year 2020!
“We believe every individual should have an equal chance in life, no matter their ability, race, religion, family status or financial background. We believe every child should be given the opportunity to develop their confidence, self-esteem, and social interaction to be able to reach their full potential in life. We believe everybody should have access to fun activities and emotional support despite financial restraints and believe every child has a potential but may need help to flourish and every child and young person should have people who care, love and support them through life’s challenges and help to improve their mental wellbeing.”
After a tough decision reviewing some amazing charities that had submitted their applications, the team at Site Equip has selected Spotlight UK as our Charity of the Year 2020. Spotlight UK is an incredible local charity that provides emotional and practical support for vulnerable and disadvantaged children and families across Basingstoke, Hart & Rushmoor, West Berkshire, Portsmouth, Southampton & Havant – most areas of which our staff currently live and have grown up in.
The charity was formed in 2009 and has done some amazing work with local children and families over the last decade. One of the many reasons Spotlight UK was selected was due to the invaluable life lessons it instills in children, as they work to increase confidence, build on social interaction, reduce isolation & increase mental health and wellbeing – all issues which aren’t widely addressed or accommodated in schools. They dedicate their time supporting young carers, children in care, children affected by domestic abuse, children who have lost a parent or sibling, children who have parents in prison or with mental health or suffer from substance abuse, and families who come from low income. With the guidance and support of Spotlight UK, children can feel a sense of belonging, self-worth, and value at an integral time in their life. The charity is more than just a charity, it is a community, it is a safe place, it is somewhere to feel loved and welcomed.
Spotlight UK offers 1-2-1 youth mentoring as well as offering fun free or low-cost activities for children, including drama, dance, singing, youth clubs, arts, and crafts & support groups. These activities not only allow children to build on their social skills and make friends but it allows them a platform to express themselves, as well as develop vital life lessons like public speaking, confidence, self-esteem, and creativity. The charity also works very closely with social services, offering mentoring and support to children that are taken into care due to personal circumstances, read Jessica’s Story to see how Spotlight UK have helped her and her little brother.
We are looking forward to working with Spotlight UK and helping raise funds to provide free-of-charge activities for families with low income, to fulfill bucket-lists for families with a terminally ill family member, to provide clothing or toys to those in need, or offering to fund for a hobby to help build a child’s self-esteem and allow them to meet new people in similar situations. The money raised will also go towards paying for youth workers, out of school club workers, performing arts team and family support teams & to keep the charity running so that they can continue to offer the invaluable support that they do to local children and families in need.
