It’s been a very tasty morning at the Site Equip HQ! We have indulged in some delicious pancakes in celebration of Shrove Tuesday! Pancake Day
Our pancake professional Steve (who also doubles up as our Construction New Business Developer!) spent the morning frying and flipping pancakes to feed us all. We had a selection of toppings including; maple syrup, bacon, Nutella, peanut butter, whipped cream, bananas, and the classic lemon and sugar combo!
All those that wanted the pleasure of pancakes would have to pay a £2 fee, with all proceeds going towards our charity of the year, St Michael’s Hospice. The Hospice focuses on providing care and support for local patients and families facing life-limiting illnesses.
Shrove Tuesday, aka Pancake Day, is a Christian celebration preceding Ash Wednesday and traditionally marks the final day of eating fatty, rich food ahead of fasting 40 days for lent. The reason we celebrate with pancakes is down to the ingredients, as it’s the last opportunity to use up eggs and fats before embarking on the Lenten fast!
According to tradition, the custom of pancake flipping dates back to 1445 when a woman from Olney, England heard the shriving bell signalling the beginning of the church service while she was busy making pancakes. The housewife, still in her apron, raced to the church carrying her frying pan and tossing her pancake along the way to prevent it from burning. As a result, villages and towns up and down the country and all around the world have celebrated by participating in different variations of pancake races to honour the tradition.
Whether this is your last indulgence before Lent, or if you just want the excuse to tuck into some delicious pancakes, we hope you enjoy Shrove Tuesday!
